About
The Deathlayer is a centuries-old German breed admired for its striking beauty, prolific white-egg production, and uniquely dramatic name, which may come from either the belief that hens lay until they die or an older term that evolved over time. Nearly lost in the 1980s, the breed rebounded after dedicated preservation efforts and remains rare today. Deathlayers are active, flighty birds that thrive only with ample space or free-range conditions, and they rarely go broody, making incubators necessary for breeding. Both silver and gold varieties feature pencilled plumage, white earlobes, gray legs, and a cushion comb, with roosters displaying especially impressive iridescent tails and dark eyes. Hens typically lay about 200 to 250 medium white eggs per year and continue producing for many years, and a rooster-to-hen ratio of about 1 to 10 works well for flock management.
