About
The Indio Gigante is a striking Brazilian chicken breed known for its exceptional height, lean body, and hard-feathered, streamlined appearance. Developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s in Minas Gerais and Goiás by crossing Malayoid breeds such as Malay and Shamo with local caipira chickens, this breed can achieve record-breaking lengths, with roosters often exceeding 36 inches and hens around 30 inches. Despite their impressive size, Indio Gigantes are calm, curious, and highly active, thriving in free-range settings and exhibiting playful, explorative behavior. Hens lay approximately 200 large tinted eggs per year and maintain productivity well into adulthood. The breed has clean, unfeathered legs, red earlobes, and either a pea or walnut comb, and a rooster-to-hen ratio of 1:8 to 1:10 ensures good fertility and viability rates of 80 percent or more. With their towering stature and engaging personalities, Indio Gigantes are both visually stunning and a lively addition to any flock.
