About
Some chicken breeds are naturally better equipped to handle cold, frigid winter temperatures. Our Cold Hardy Assortment brings together a selection of these breeds, chosen for traits like their country of origin, feathered legs or beards, small comb size, black skin from the fibromelanistic gene, or a combination of these characteristics. By raising these breeds, you’re not only adding resilient birds to your flock—you’re also helping preserve rare and heritage lines, supporting the conservation of valuable poultry genetics.
For a complete list of breeds that may be included, please view our Cold Hardy Breeds by visiting our All Birds page and filtering for cold hardy breeds under popular collections. You can also view the images on this page to see examples of the breeds you may receive. If there’s a specific cold-hardy breed you’d like to receive, please include that request in the notes section when placing your order, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
While these breeds are hardy, please remember that depending on your local climate and environmental conditions, additional care may still be needed to protect your birds during extreme cold.
Most breeds in this assortment will be shipped unsexed. Auto-sexing breeds—Bielefelder, 55 Flowery Hen, and Cream Legbar—will be sexed, and we will include both male and female chicks, with more than half being female unless you specifically request otherwise. All other breeds are included unsexed, as we do not vent sex at our farm.
The price listed is per day-old chick or hatching egg. You may add as few as one or as many as you like to your cart. Orders of 1–3 chicks or eggs are guaranteed to include at least one breed, 4–5 will include at least two breeds, and 6 or more will include at least four breeds. We always strive to provide as much variety as possible.
You are welcome to mix and match breeds or assortments to meet our 6-chick shipping minimum.
