About
Ayam Cemani chickens, originating from Java around 1500 AD, are one of the world’s most visually striking breeds, known for their fibromelanistic gene that makes their feathers, skin, muscles, bones, and even organs an inky black—earning them the nickname “the Lamborghini of poultry.” Revered in Asia for both their beauty and the mystical reputation of their black meat, they later gained international recognition after being imported to Europe in the mid-1900s and then to the U.S. in 2014 for the first time by Greenfire Farms, with new Belgian bloodlines added in 2023. Medium-sized and naturally alert, they are active, heat-tolerant birds whose iridescent plumage and gamefowl-like build set them apart. Hens lay 60–100 cream-colored eggs annually in irregular cycles, are exceptionally broody, and vigorously protect their chicks, while a rooster-to-hen ratio of about 1:12 works well. The breed standard centers on their signature black pigmentation, a single five-point comb, tight wings, and upright, broad-chested posture.
