About
The 55 Flowery Hen, created in 1955 in Sweden by Father Martin Silverudd, is his most enduring and successful breed. An autosexing Leghorn derivative designed for commercial egg production, with chicks easily sexed at hatch and males and females remaining visually distinct throughout life. Known for their two color varieties, gold and silver, these birds mature into nearly white roosters and beautifully speckled “flowery” hens that lay an impressive 200–250 jumbo white eggs per year. Active, alert, and excellent foragers, they are generally non-aggressive but can be protective, with hens sometimes choosing to roost outdoors when free-ranging. The breed follows the Leghorn standard with unique coloration and flatter rooster tails, making the 55 Flowery Hen both a practical layer and a striking example of Silverudd’s breeding vision.
