The Shetland Hen is a rare and historic landrace breed from the Shetland Islands of Scotland, developed over centuries of isolation, harsh weather, and crofting life. Valued for its hardiness, self-sufficiency, and exceptional foraging ability, it carries a unique heritage that likely reflects a mix of local Scottish chickens and historic imported poultry, including blue-egg genetics. Nearly lost in the 20th century, it survives today through dedicated conservation efforts and is recognized as critically endangered on the Slow Food Ark of Taste.

Shetland Hens are small to medium-sized birds with a distinctive crest, clean legs, and varied plumage. Active and highly alert, they thrive in free-range systems, while roosters are attentive flock guardians. Hens lay around 150–200 green to blue eggs annually but are not typically broody, and often choose unconventional nesting sites. Their compact, hardy build makes them exceptionally well suited to outdoor living.

As a landrace breed, the Shetland Hen is defined by function rather than strict appearance standards, though key traits include a tufted crest, S-shaped comb, and unfeathered legs shaped by centuries of natural selection.

Breed History

Developed over centuries on the windswept Shetland Islands north of mainland Scotland, the Shetland Hen is a hardy landrace breed shaped by isolation, harsh weather, and traditional subsistence farming. Alert, resilient, and highly self-sufficient, these birds became valued for their ability to forage efficiently and thrive in the demanding North Atlantic climate.

Their lineage is believed to trace back nearly 500 years, when Spanish galleons carrying exotic poultry, including blue-egg genetics from South America, were wrecked along the Shetland coast. Over time, these birds interbred with local Scottish chickens, giving rise to the distinctive Shetland Hen! Today, the breed is celebrated for its unique heritage and rare characteristics and is listed as critically endangered on the Slow Food Ark of Taste.

For generations, crofting families on the islands kept small household flocks that supplied eggs, meat, feathers, and pest control while surviving on sparse feed and extensive free-ranging. Because the Shetland Islands remained geographically isolated, the breed evolved largely outside the influence of mainland commercial poultry breeding.

Natural selection favored birds with exceptional hardiness, fertility, broodiness, and predator awareness. Unlike exhibition breeds developed for strict appearance standards, the Shetland Hen evolved as a practical survival breed, resulting in a genetically diverse population well adapted to rugged outdoor living.

During the twentieth century, industrial agriculture and imported hybrid layers pushed the breed close to extinction. Thanks to the efforts of conservation breeders and heritage poultry enthusiasts, the Shetland Hen survives today as both a rare genetic resource and an important part of Scotland’s agricultural heritage.

Appearance and Behavior

The Shetland Hen is a small to medium-sized landrace breed known for its distinctive crest, clean legs, and naturally varied plumage patterns. Their most recognizable feature is the prominent crest, which can become quite full and dramatic. In some birds, the crest feathers may grow large enough to obstruct vision, so occasional trimming can help improve visibility and make foraging and navigation easier.

Active, hardy, and highly self-sufficient, Shetland Hens are exceptional foragers that thrive in free-range environments. They spend much of the day searching for insects, seeds, and greens, making them an excellent choice for sustainable homesteads! Roosters are especially attentive flock guardians, often keeping a watchful eye on their hens while guiding them to food sources and sounding alarms when danger is near.

Shetland Hens are dependable layers of stunning green to blue eggs, typically producing around 150 to 200 eggs per year. True to their independent and somewhat whimsical nature, our hens often prefer laying their eggs in carefully chosen spots around their coop rather than neatly inside nest boxes, adding a bit of daily treasure hunting for their keepers. Shetland Hen ladies do not tend to go broody. Hens generally weigh between 3.5 and 5 pounds, while roosters mature to a slightly larger 4.5 to 6 pounds, giving the breed a compact yet hardy build well-suited for active outdoor living.

Breed Standard

As a traditional landrace breed, the Shetland Hen differs from highly standardized exhibition poultry, with greater emphasis placed on hardiness, utility, and genetic diversity than rigid cosmetic uniformity. Rather than adhering to a standard of perfection, the breed is defined by a framework of characteristics developed through generations of natural adaptation. The Shetland Hen is a small to medium-sized bird, with a tufted crest, an S-shaped comb, and legs free of feathering.

Hatching Eggs

We incubate at 99.5F and 55% humidity. The Shetland Hen generally hatch reliably, with around 80% of eggs in our hatcher successfully hatching right on schedule (day 21).

Breed defects or issues

When hatching Shetland Hen chicks, each bird should be inspected for the presence of a crest. In day-old chicks, the crest is often visible as small tufts of down, sometimes described as “eyebrow fluffs,” located above the eyes on the front portion of the head. While subtle at this age, these early signs can help identify chicks that carry the breed’s characteristic crest.

Chicks should not exhibit a vaulted skull, which is often indicated by an excessively large or bulbous crest. Birds displaying this defect should be excluded from breeding programs. The merits of every bird should be assessed as they reach adulthood.

Notes

Greenfire Farms first imported the Shetland Hen in 2019, followed by an unrelated bloodline in 2023! This new bloodline was imported directly from the UK, further strengthening the breed’s genetic diversity in the United States. By 2025, we began offering chicks and hatching eggs from this exciting new line. Because this bloodline is still being carefully expanded, availability remains limited, and preordering is strongly recommended as we continue growing the flock.

One of the most exciting aspects of the 2023 Import Line is its tendency to produce a greater number of lighter-colored offspring, providing valuable diversity to the American Shetland Hen population, where darker plumage has traditionally been more common. To help breeders and enthusiasts distinguish between the two bloodlines, birds from this import will be sold separately and identified as the “2023 Import Line”.
