About

The Gauloise Dorée is France’s oldest chicken breed, a golden-plumaged bird with roots reaching back to ancient Gaul and even the red junglefowl itself. Once used by Roman priests to predict military success and later adopted as a national symbol of French spirit, the breed holds a remarkable place in European history. After nearly disappearing in the mid-20th century, it was rediscovered and revived, though it remains extremely rare today. The Gauloise Dorée resembles the red junglefowl in both form and behavior, with black-breasted red plumage, slate blue legs, a straight comb, and a quick, flight-oriented temperament. A dual-purpose bird related to the famed Bresse, it offers excellent meat quality and lays about 180 white eggs per year, with hens often going broody and raising chicks well. They thrive in free-range settings, prefer warm-season breeding, and do best with a rooster-to-hen ratio of about 1 to 10. Medium in size and elegant in build, the Gauloise Dorée is now available in North America for the first time through Greenfire Farms.
